About CEI

Community Education Initiative (CEI) at Boston Children’s Hospital provides professional development for school nurses and other community providers with the goal of increasing education in pediatric clinical and social issues. Offerings include monthly education programs, school professional days, all-day conferences, online programs and other collaborative ventures with Boston Children’s Hospital and other community providers. CEI provides 50-80 programs per year reaching approximately 1500-1800 school nurses on clinical topics, mental health, wellness, caring for students with disabilities, and topics with a focus on cultural diversity and English language learners.

Program Coordinator:

Heather Engholm MPH BSN RN CPN

Heather Engholm, MPH BSN RN CPN, has been working with the Community Education Initiative (CEI) at Boston Children's Hospital as a program coordinator since 2018, helping to plan professional development for school nurses on clinical, wellness, and mental health topics. In addition to her role with CEI, Heather is also a nurse consultant with MASSTART, a Title V program funded through the MA Dept. of Public Health that provides consultation services to families and schools on health care and emergency planning for children with special health care needs. Throughout her career, Heather has given numerous presentations regionally on “Health Care and Emergency Planning for Students with Special Health Care Needs” and “Supporting Students with Medical Technologies in the School Setting”. In 2019, Heather co-authored a chapter on “Children Assisted by Medical Technology in Educational Settings” in the National Association for School Nurses most recent edition of their textbook: School Nursing A Comprehensive Text. In 2022, Heather began working as a nurse faculty member for the LEND (Leadership Education for Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities) fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she was previously a fellow in 2017-2018.

Program Coordinator:

Leanne Langmaid DNP, RN, NE-BC, CPN

Leanne Langmaid is a nurse leader who has dedicated over 16 years to Boston Children’s Hospital. She currently balances two leadership roles: as Clinical Coordinator for 7Mandell, she manages the 24/7 operations, staffing, and safety audits for a 32-bed inpatient medicine unit , and as Coordinator of the Community Education Initiative, she facilitates specialized clinical training and education sessions for regional school nursing districts. Her expertise in program development is highlighted by her tenure as a Nurse Transition Coordinator, where she founded a multidisciplinary outpatient Transition Clinic to support young adults moving to adult healthcare. Beyond clinical operations and research, she maintains a robust academic background, having served as Adjunct Faculty at Simmons University and MCPHS University, where she educated both undergraduate and graduate students on contemporary professional nursing issues and pediatric clinical practice. Leanne is board-certified as both a Nurse Executive and a Certified Pediatric Nurse.

I have served as the Administrative Program Manager for the Community Education Initiative since 2004, bringing over two decades of experience in program coordination and community health education. In this role, I oversee the planning and execution of professional development trainings for school nurses and healthcare providers, ensuring each session meets high standards of quality and relevance. My long-standing commitment has helped enhance the skills of frontline health professionals and improve health outcomes in school communities.
